Light switch wiring - red wire on a single pole switch
The red wire is coming from the circuit of another switch in the box for the dining room light. Does attaching the red wire to this single pole switch endStatus: ResolvedAnswers: 8The most likely reason 2 wires were in the quick wire slots and the other was under a screw is because the person doing the work didn't know how to make a splice.
A red wire secured to the upper screw on the side doesn't tell me everything I would like to know, however.
1) It is another switch leg going out to something you're not aware of.
2) It is a hot going out to something you're not aware of.
3) It's a being used as a ground, but then the breaker would pop when you operated the 3-way you say you have installed temporarily. Hmm.
If you remember which color it was paired up with before just splice them together, and install the single pole switch. That way what ever it goes to will have power.Best answer · 2Looks like they are feeding power to the porch light switch via the red wire from the dining room light switch OR feeding the power to the dining room light switch via the red wire on the porch light switch.
If you've installed a 3-way switch, it's possible that the dining room light may not work depending upon the switch position and whether the power comes FROM the dining room light switch or the power is fed TO the dining room light switch.
You can use both quickwire connections and the screw terminals. You have to use the screw terminal if you are going to feed power downstream of the local connection point.0Once again, Lediy99 has provided a great answer. Thumbs up and please vote as Best Answer.
I will address your comment on the quickwire holes though. On a switch, it is actually quite common for electricians to use both the hole and the screw terminal. This is usually done by someone too lazy to 'pigtail' splice the wires together. It is allowed since the devices are approved/listed for this. I, personally, do not advocate it however. We have another name for quickwire: 'stab-in-the-back'. This is how they connect, it is also what they do to you years later. Anytime that you encounter these, please splice the wires down, if necessary, and use only screw-terminals (one wire per screw).3How To Wire A Lightswitch0Sounds like someone used a red wire for a ground wire or a neutral wire. need a volt meter to be sure0My guess would be that the switch is also connected to a receptacle somewhere in the house or outside. This will give you power to the 2 area`s. Unless you have another switch to the the light that are connected in series.0I agree that "Lediy99" has provided the 10 point answer.
As far as "Lic. Electrician"'s comment goes about "another name", I call those "Quick-wire holes", SERVICE CALLS. When people use them, all they are doing is creating a situation that will (usually) require a service call to repair. Please, "pig-tail" wires and leave those holes ALONE! My apprentice calls them trouble. Good luck and may God bless.2
